The Ruling on Clearing the Throat, Blowing the Nose, and Crying in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding clearing the throat, blowing the nose, and crying in prayer? Do they invalidate the prayer or not?

A: Clearing the throat, blowing the nose, and crying do not invalidate the prayer, and there is no blame in them if there is a need for them; however, doing them without need is disliked. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to clear his throat for 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked for permission to enter while he was praying.
As for crying, it is prescribed in prayer and elsewhere if it stems from humility and turning to Allah without affectation. It is authentically reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to cry in prayer. This is also authentically reported from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and 'Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with them both), and from a group of others among the Companions and those who followed them in excellence.
