The Difference Between Tarawih, Qiyam al-Layl, and Tahajjud

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The brother (A. M. S.) from Alexandria, Egypt, says in his question: What is the difference between the tarawih prayer, qiyam al-layl, and tahajjud? Please answer us, and may Allah reward you.

A: Prayer at night is called tahajjud, and it is called qiyam al-layl; as Allah the Exalted said:
And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for youوَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ
[Al-Isra: 79], and He the Exalted said:
(1) O you who wraps himself [in clothing], (2) Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ ۝ قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۝
[Al-Muzzammil: 1-2], and He the Exalted said regarding His pious servants:
(16) Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good. (17) They used to sleep but little of the night,آخِذِينَ مَا آتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ ۝ كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ ۝
[Adh-Dhariyat: 16-17].
As for tarawih: it is used by scholars to refer to qiyam al-layl in Ramadan at the beginning of the night, with attention to keeping it light and not prolonging it. It is permissible to call it tahajjud, and it is permissible to call it qiyam al-layl, and there is no dispute in that. And success is from Allah.
