"And it is not permissible to drink it for pleasure, nor for treatment, nor for thirst, nor for anything else."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He says "And it is not permissible to drink it for pleasure". It is known that if a person says he wants to drink alcohol in order to enjoy it, saying to himself, "I am tired; worries and sorrows have exhausted me; I want to drink this cup of alcohol so that I can relax and enjoy myself and see that there is no worry, no sorrow, no world, no family, and no children before me, but rather I am one of the kings of the world," imagining this, is it permissible for him to drink it for this purpose?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : How can he not say, "Have mercy on us, people; I am tired, I am fed up with my life, and time does not become pleasant for me until I drink a cup of what I have"? Yes, we say we have mercy on you by forbidding you, because if you do this, you will experience intoxication, joy, dizziness, and forgetfulness for a moment, but it will be followed by more worry and sorrow than before, like a painkiller: if you take it, the pain subsides, but when its effect wears off, it returns with greater intensity. Good. "And it is not permissible for treatment". It is known that it is not permissible for treatment because we know with certainty that there is no medicine in it, and it is as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is a disease and not a medicine إنها داء وليست بدواء
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 27:88
If it were a medicine, Allah would not have forbidden it to His servants, for Allah does not forbid His servants anything that is beneficial to them, whether as food or medicine. Therefore, it is not permissible to drink it for treatment. Good. "And not for thirst". It is not permissible to drink it for thirst. A man is dying of thirst, at his last breath, and he has a cup of alcohol, so he says he wants to drink it because of thirst. Is it permissible? It is not permissible, because they say that it increases thirst; it does not quench thirst or cure illness, but rather increases it. Therefore, it is not permissible for thirst. "And not for anything else". For anything else, such as boasting, testing, and the like, except in one case, which may be rare but may occur.
