The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 443 )
Q 5: What is the ruling on a soul that is on the verge of perishing and cannot be cured by anything other than intoxicants due to a disease caused by its biting cold?
A 5: Treatment is among the prescribed matters, but it must be with what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has prescribed and what His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has prescribed, for that is what can bring healing. As for what Allah has forbidden, there is no healing in it. Among the indications of the prohibition of treating with forbidden medicines in general, and with intoxicants in particular, is what al-Bukhari narrated in his (Sahih) as a mursal report from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): “Indeed, Allah has not made your healing in what He has forbidden to you.” It was also transmitted by al-Tabarani with a chain whose narrators are the narrators of the authentic collections, and it was reported by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban in his (Sahih), and al-Bazzar and Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani , and the narrators of Abu Ya'la are trustworthy, from Umm Salama . And what Abu Dawud narrated in his (Sunan) from the hadith of Abu al-Darda' , who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.
إن الله أنزل الداء والدواء، وجعل لكل داء دواء، فتداووا ولا تداووا بحرامIt is not a medicine, but a disease
إنه ليس دواء ولكنه داءAnd it is good to point out: When Allah commands something, it is either for pure benefit, or because its benefit outweighs its harm. And when He forbids something, it is either for pure harm, or because its harm outweighs its benefit. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Wise and All-Knowing. The idea that this disease is not cured except by drinking intoxicants is a delusion. Medicines are numerous, both religious and natural. The medicine does not cure the disease; rather, healing is from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) when the medicine is used. Resorting to the lawful means may be accompanied by reliance on them, or it may be accompanied by making them a means while relying on Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and believing that they may benefit or may not benefit. This is what is required by the Shari'ah. As for relying on them entirely, that is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
