And the woman's ihram is like that of the man, except in clothing; she must avoid the burqu' and gloves and covering her face, and it is permissible for her to wear jewelry.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he said: "And the woman's ihram is like that of the man" in what? In that what is forbidden to men is forbidden to her, and the expiation that is obligatory for men is obligatory for her, except for what is excluded. He said: "Except in clothing", so she is not like the man, because the man does not wear the shirt, the trousers, the overcoat, the turban, or the leather socks, whereas the woman wears these and there is no sin on her.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : The turban? She wears the turban, but her turban is a khimar; her turban is a khimar. So his saying: "Except in clothing" means that clothing is not forbidden to her, but one type of clothing is forbidden to her, which is gloves. They are clothing for the hands, and they are forbidden to her. For this reason, the author said: "And she must avoid the burqu' and gloves". If the author had said the burqu' and the niqab, or said only the niqab, it would have been better than his restriction to the burqu' only, because the burqu' is adornment, while the niqab is a necessity. The woman uses the niqab to cover her face, opening it for her eyes to the extent of the eyes so she can see. And the burqu'? It is for beautification; it is considered part of the beautiful clothes for the face. So it is a niqab and more. Therefore, we say the burqu' is forbidden for the woman in ihram. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And the woman does not wear the niqab ولا تنتقب المرأة
And if the woman in ihram is forbidden the niqab, then her prohibition from the burqu' is even more so. And she must avoid gloves. Gloves are clothing made for the hands, as is made for falcons. Clothing made for the hands, or manufactured for the hands, as is manufactured for falcons. What are falcons? Falcons is the plural of baz, meaning bird owners. Bird owners put gloves on their hands to protect themselves from the bird's talons when he holds it like this on his hand. And I think you know it by another name among us. What is it?
Al-Dusus. Yes, al-dusus, because the woman slips her hands into them. It is also called by another name, sharab al-yadayn, meaning the sleeves of the hands. It is well known. So the woman does not wear gloves, and they are clothing for the hands, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And do not wear gloves. ولا تلبس القفازين
So she shares with the man in one type of clothing, which is gloves, because the man also does not wear gloves, because they are fine clothing.
He said: "And covering her face", meaning she must avoid covering the face, so she does not cover the face. As for the man, it has been mentioned to us previously that the stronger position is that he covers the face, because the word
And not his face ولا وجهه
in the story of the one who died is disputed regarding its authenticity, and it contains a type of deviation. Therefore, the jurists turned away from it and said that there is no harm in the man in ihram covering his face. The man in ihram often needs it; for example, he may sleep and place a handkerchief or the like on his face to protect against flies or sweat or the like. It is said that she must cover her face, and this is the well-known position of the school. They mentioned a rule, but it is a rule... They mentioned what? That the woman's ihram is in her face. If they meant by this that it is the place where a specific clothing is prohibited, then this is correct. But if they meant by this covering, then this is not correct, because it was not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the woman uncovers her face. Rather, the prohibition was reported regarding the niqab. The niqab is covering of the face, not uncovering it. But the niqab is clothing for the face, so it is as if the woman was forbidden clothing for the face, just as the man was forbidden clothing for the body and clothing for the head.
The author said: "And it is permissible for her to wear jewelry". It is permissible for the woman in ihram to wear jewelry, meaning to wear ornaments. The intended meaning is permissible jewelry, not all jewelry. So jewelry in the form of an animal is forbidden to her and to others. But permissible jewelry is permissible for her. That is, ihram does not prevent the woman from wearing jewelry. But the question remains regarding the author's statement: is it in its absolute sense, meaning that the woman in ihram wears jewelry and displays it to men, or does she wear it with the obligation to cover it from men? The second option, meaning she must cover the jewelry from men. But if she is alone in the house, or with women, or with her husband, or with her mahrams, and she has jewelry on, there is no harm. And wearing jewelry was made permissible for her just as wearing jewelry was made permissible for the man with what? With the ring. The man in ihram is allowed to wear a ring and there is no harm. So likewise, the woman is allowed to wear permissible jewelry and there is no harm. These are the prohibitions of ihram.
