The limit of the older women (qawa'id) for whom hijab is not obligatory
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: My mother is a woman of about fifty years of age, or perhaps older. Is she required to wear the Shari'ah-prescribed attire (the niqab) when going out of the house, given that she wears modest clothing and shows only her face and hands? What is the best course of action? And what should we do if she does not obey our command? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
A woman of fifty is still strong and is not among the qawa'id (older women); people's desires still incline toward her. Therefore, it is obligatory (wajib) for her to cover herself and not expose herself. Allah says:[An-Nur 24:60], then He, the Exalted, said: [Surat al-Nur: 60]. The qawa'id are the old women who are no longer looked at and do not adorn themselves. As for a woman of fifty, she still has vitality. Therefore, what she should do is cover herself, and it is obligatory (wajib) for her to cover herself and not adorn herself in front of non-mahram men. However, among women, there is no harm in showing the 'awrah (parts of the body that must be covered), just like other women. But in front of men, she should cover her face with the khimar (head covering) or the niqab, and her hands with her clothing, because this is further from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and due to the generality of His, the Exalted, saying: [Surat al-Ahzab: 53].
As for the old woman who is not desired and does not wear beautiful clothes, there is no harm in her showing her face and hands, without adornment, without kohl or beautification. However, covering them is better. Yes.

And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment
But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them
وَأَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْنََ خَيْرٌ لَهُنَّAnd when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
As for the old woman who is not desired and does not wear beautiful clothes, there is no harm in her showing her face and hands, without adornment, without kohl or beautification.
