What is the ruling on studying in a coeducational university?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling on my studying in a coeducational university, given that I am a committed Salafi young man?

The Shaykh : They do not coexist... Commitment does not coexist with free mixing of men and women. Therefore, we do not see this unjust study as permissible. Indeed, man is created with lustful desires, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is decreed for the son of Adam his share of zina, and it will overtake him inevitably. The eye commits zina, and its zina is looking. The ear commits zina, and its zina is listening. The hand commits zina, and its zina is touching. The foot commits zina, and its zina is walking. And the private parts confirm all of this or deny it.
There is no doubt that these means, and these preliminaries to the major sin, are among the things the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited, in order to block the means to harm. For this reason, it was part of the eloquence of the Qur'an that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way. ولا تقربوا الزنا إنه كان فاحشة وساء سبيلا
[Al-Isra 17:32]
He did not say "do not commit zina," but rather "do not approach [zina]." Approaching zina occurs by engaging in its preliminaries, and these preliminaries are looking, listening, shaking hands, and the like. When the committed Muslim young man enters the university, he will not come out of it as he entered it. He is bound to be affected by some of its spray. If he does not fall into the major sin, his character is bound to be tainted by some of the mixing that is not prescribed. Yes.

The questioner : Of course, this applies to the young man and the young woman as well?

The Shaykh : It is so, and women are the counterparts of men.

The questioner : ...All universities are coeducational except the Islamic University.

The Shaykh : This is sufficient for us.
