The Ruling on Buying Three-Dimensional Toys for Children

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Please tell us about children’s toys that are three-dimensional, either in the shape of a human or an animal. Is it permissible to buy them for the purpose of entertaining the children and for them to play with, or is it not?

Answer:
This issue is a matter of disagreement among the scholars. Some of them permitted it because of the humiliation involved and the entertainment it provides for children, and because it trains girls in the care and upbringing of children. They cited as evidence for this the authentic hadith from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): “She had dolls with which she played, and the girls used to come to her to play with her with them.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of their doing so.
Others among the scholars said: Rather, it is obligatory to prevent this... to prevent these three-dimensional images. They said that the girls with Aisha were not three-dimensional, but were in accordance with the custom of the Arabs in making toys from bones or sticks, dressed in clothes so that they resembled an image, but were not depicted images.
Therefore, the safest course for the believer is to avoid these depicted toys. The safest and closest position is that it should be left off; out of fear of what came in the authentic hadiths regarding the curse for that, and the severity in that. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Aisha and saw a curtain with images in it, he became angry and tore it, and said:
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
And he said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him):
Spare no portrait unwiped outلا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
.
So the Muslim keeps away from the thing that Allah has forbidden, and these things called toys are feared to fall under that. So the safest course for the believer is to leave them off. As for being certain of their prohibition, that is a matter of consideration... it is a matter of consideration. But in any case, the least that can be said about them is that they are doubtful. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorمن اتقى الشبهات؛ فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
