The Prayer of the Traveler and Its Manner

Question:
One of the listening brothers says: Your brother Muhammad Husayn Badaawi is Egyptian and works in Jordan. I have heard about the prayer of the traveler, and that he must shorten the prayer. We are travelers and we reside here, but our wives are in our home countries. Tell us about that prayer of the traveler, because I have not heard of it before? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
The prayer of the traveler is two rak'ahs in the Zuhr, 'Asr, and 'Isha' prayers, as Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Nisa: 101]. And "traveling" means the journey. And His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): [Al-Nisa: 101],
This is considered abrogated by the people of knowledge, and it is not a condition; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shortened the prayer while he was safe, which indicates that it is not a condition, but rather a predominant description, or it is abrogated as a group of the people of knowledge said. It is not obligatory; shortening is recommended. So if he prays four rak'ahs while he is a traveler, his prayer is valid, just as 'Umar, the rightly guided caliph, prayed the full prayer with the Muslims in his pilgrimages in the last of his life; so there is no blame in that. But shortening is better. So if he is a traveler, he prays two rak'ahs during his journey.
And likewise, if he passes through a land and resides in it for one day, or two, or three, or four days, he also shortens. If he intends to reside in the land for more than four days, then he completes the prayer according to the majority of the people of knowledge and most of them.
As for if he resides for a period whose end he does not know, he passes through the town and has a need, seeking a person for whom he has a need, or he has a dispute, and he does not know when it will end, or he has a lost item he is seeking, or a found item he is seeking, and he does not know when he will find it; then he shortens, even if his period is long, as long as he does not know when it will end.
As for if he intends a known residence of four days or less, then he shortens. If he intends a known residence of more than four days, then he completes the prayer according to most of the people of knowledge. Yes.
