Causes of the Hardening of Hearts and Their Cure
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The listener (M. M. M.) sent a question, saying: Is severing family ties one of the causes of the hardening of hearts?
Answer: Yes, all sins are among the causes of the hardening of hearts. Negligence in the remembrance of Allah and in reading the Qur'an is among the causes of the hardening of hearts. Severing family ties is among the sins that cause the hardening of hearts as well. Likewise, undutifulness to the parents or to one of them is also among the causes of the hardening of hearts. So, all sins are among the causes of the hardening of hearts. The believer should beware of them and stay away from them, and he should repent to Allah for what he has done of them. Thus, it is obligatory for the believing man and the believing woman to repent to Allah from all sins; for they are a great evil in this world and the Hereafter; and they are among the causes of the hardening of hearts; and among the causes of the anger of Allah in this world and the Hereafter; and among the causes of a bad ending; and among the causes of punishment on the Day of Resurrection and in the interval between death and resurrection. So, it is obligatory to beware of all of them. Among them are backbiting, talebearing, undutifulness to the parents or to one of them, severing family ties, consuming usury or interest, consuming what is forbidden, and earning what is forbidden through betrayal, through theft, through robbery and usurpation, and other such sins. Among them are unlawful sexual intercourse and drinking intoxicants, may Allah protect us. All of these are among the ugliest sins. So, it is obligatory for the believing man and the believing woman to beware of that, and to repent to Allah for what has passed, with sincerity, with desire for what is with Allah, with complete regret for the past evils, and with ceasing from them, and with a sincere resolve not to return to them, being sincere to Allah and magnifying Him, (Glorified and Exalted is He), hoping for His reward and fearing His punishment. Thus, it is obligatory for every Muslim man and Muslim woman. We ask Allah for all of us for success and guidance.
