Some of the Causes of the Hardening of the Heart

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His Eminence the Shaykh: What are the causes of the hardening of the heart? Is excessive eating and sleeping among the causes of the hardening of the heart?
The causes of the hardening of the heart are many.Among them: Turning away from the remembrance of Allah, and a person not remembering Allah except a little. You will find that even in the obligatory prayer, he does not remember Allah with his heart. He recites, bows, prostrates, glorifies, and supplicates, while his heart is heedless. This is among the causes of hardness.

Among the causes of the hardening of the heart is also: Excessive joking, playing, and being preoccupied with friends and family. For this reason, some of the Companions said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “When we are with you, we become so humble that it is as if we are seeing Paradise and the Fire. But when we leave and mix with our families and children, we forget. He said: An hour and an hour.”

And among the causes of the hardening of the heart is also: Throwing oneself into this world and preferring it over the Hereafter, and a person’s only concern being the accumulation of wealth. It has many causes.
Therefore, a person should, if he sees hardness in his heart, hasten to seek a cure before it becomes like stone and he is unable to cure it.

The questioner: Food? The Shaykh: This may be among the causes of the hardening of the heart, because a person’s only concern may be his stomach, though sometimes a person may be full and not find any hardness in his heart.
