Living with those who commit major sins, such as drinking intoxicants or others
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The kind listener, Abdul Rahman, sent a message containing two questions. In one of them, he says: "Praise be to Allah, I am a Muslim, and I continue to perform my five daily prayers. I live with a group of people, but some of them, may Allah forgive them, consume intoxicants inside the room. I know that I pray in it and eat with them. Is my prayer and eating permissible? May Allah reward you with good."
Answer: Praise be to Allah who has guided you to steadfastness. We advise you to strive to advise those who drink intoxicants, and to pray for their success and guidance. Also, advise your brothers to help you in advising them, so that they repent from this evil deed and this great major sin.
Your prayer in the room is not harmed even if they do that in it. Your voluntary prayer in it has no blame. And eating with them, if that is for the purpose of directing them to good and advising them, all of this is good. However, if they refuse and drink intoxicants while you are present, no, do not sit with them, and do not eat with them at a table over which intoxicants are circulated.
As for if you are advising them and they do not drink intoxicants while you are present, directing them to good and advising them, but they do not drink intoxicants while you are present, yet you know that some of them drink intoxicants, that does not prevent you from sitting with them, advising them, and eating with them, until Allah guides those among them who were drinking intoxicants, and until they return to the right path by your means, if Allah wills.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
