The Ruling on Fasting the Day of Ashura and the Days of the Migration

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
How is the fasting of Ashura performed? And how is the fasting of the days of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) migration performed? Is it permissible to fast the tenth day of it? I ask for clarification. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: As for the fasting of Ashura, the Sunnah is for a person to fast the tenth day of Muharram, and to fast with it a day before it or a day after it. The best is to fast the ninth with the tenth, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
If I live till the next (year), I would definitely observe fast on the 9thلئن عشت إلى قابل لأصومن التاسع
Sahih Muslim 1134b
meaning: with the tenth. And it is narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Abu Hurairah, narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “None of you should fast on Friday, unless he fasts together with the day before or the day after.” Agreed upon.خالفوا اليهود وصوموا يومًا قبله أو يومًا بعده
Bulugh al-Maram 5:41
.
So the Sunnah for the believer is to fast the ninth and the tenth together, or to fast the tenth with the eleventh, or to fast all three: the ninth, the tenth, and the eleventh. All of this involves differing from the Jews. The believer differs from them, meaning: he is commanded to differ from the enemies of Allah, from the People of the Book and from other disbelievers.
As for the days of the migration, fasting them is not prescribed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast the days of the migration, neither the first day nor any other. Likewise, the day of Badr, and all the days of the Trench, are not fasted. Likewise, the day of the Conquest; Allah did not prescribe fasting any of these (Glorified and Exalted is He). Rather, what was prescribed for us is fasting the Day of Ashura, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, fasting three days of every month—and if he fasts them on the white days, it is better—and fasting six days of Shawwal after Ramadan. All of these are recommended. As for the days of the migration, fasting them is not prescribed; rather, it is a religious innovation if that is intended. Yes.
