The Criterion for Excess in Necessities

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the limit of excess in food, drink, clothing, and household furnishings?
Answer: Excess is what goes beyond the need that is customary, and where there is no use for the food, such as throwing it in the trash. However, if there is a use for it, such as for the poor, birds, or animals, then it is not excess if there is a surplus. As for intentionally increasing the food to a point where it has no use, this is called excess and wastefulness. The same applies to other things, such as furnishings and the like; if there is no need for them, it is excess. One should instead focus on furnishings that are customary in terms of beauty, adornment, and covering. One should not burden oneself with things for which there is no need. If bringing them in or buying them is considered wastefulness, meaning they have no justification and no need, then one should preserve wealth. However, if one buys goods to keep them for a time of need, storing them until that time, then there is no harm in it.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and do you good.
