The Ruling on the Sufi Orders
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Another letter reached the program from the listener Husayn ibn Badi' ibn Rifa'i from the Banu Suwayf Governorate in the Arab Republic of Egypt. He says: There is a newly established order called al-Barhani, affiliated with a man named Muhammad Uthman al-Barhani. This order interprets the Great Qur'an figuratively, and it is spreading rapidly. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this order? Is it disbelieving, or as it claims, is it the saved sect? And what are the scriptural proofs for declaring it a disbeliever if it is indeed disbelieving? Please guide us. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
All the Sufi orders, al-Barhani, al-Shadhili, and others such as al-Tijani, are all dangerous. One must be cautious of them, stay away from them, and not trust them. They are divided into categories; among them are disbelievers, and among them are those who are not disbelievers.
Therefore, the believer should stay away from the books of the Sufis and reading them, because they harm him, and they contain a great deal of falsehood and evil. You, O Abdullah, should stay away from them and read the books of the people of the Sunnah and the community, which contain goodness, and which explain what the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) indicate. They are sufficient. In turning to the Qur'an, increasing its recitation, and reflecting on its meanings, there is great good and happiness. In the authentic, established books of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there is good and blessing. The Sunnah explains the Qur'an, interprets its meaning, and clarifies what is difficult for the student of knowledge. Allah sent down His Book as guidance for people, as He said (Glorified and Exalted is He): : [al-Isra:9] [Fussilat:44]. He the Exalted said: [al-Nahl:89]. He the Sublime said: [Sad:29]. And He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : [al-An'am:155].
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified for us what may be difficult for us, and made clear for the Ummah what they need. So you, O Abdullah, should be content with what came in the Book and the Sunnah, and stay away from books that contain myths, misguidance, and religious innovations, such as the books of the Sufis and others compiled by disbelievers, or theologians, or followers of deviant orders. For in them is evil, affliction, and contradiction of the Shari'ah of Allah that harms the servant if he holds to it, or takes it, or reads it without insight. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.
