Explaining the Innovation of Mawlid Celebrations and Their Abominations

Question:
This questioner, Muhammad Husayn, an Egyptian, says in this question: “Your Eminence! What is the ruling in your view on the mawlid celebrations held for the awliya (close friends of Allah), such as Sayyid al-Badawi or Sayyidah Zaynab or Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him), or the shrines in the villages, or the celebration of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mawlid? These are accompanied by processions in cities, rural areas, and hamlets, with drums and flutes being beaten in all forms that violate the religion, and by the mixing of young men and men with women. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view on this? May we be rewarded.”
Answer:
These things are religious innovations for which Allah has sent down no authority, and they are not permissible. Celebrating mawlid celebrations, whether the mawlid of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the mawlid of al-Badawi, the mawlid of al-Husayn, or any other, are all religious innovations, and it is not permissible to celebrate them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this, nor did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Therefore, they are among the innovations, and what occurs in them, such as musical instruments, drums, and the mixing of men and women, is another abomination, other abominations. All of this must be prevented.
It is obligatory that people accept what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions accepted: that one invites for the deceased, visits the grave, and makes du'a' (supplication) for them without celebrating their mawlid. Graves are visited, and du'a' is made for their inhabitants for forgiveness and mercy. As for holding a celebration for the year, or for a year other than the first, or for the month, or for two years regarding the mawlid, this is all an abomination with no basis. Rather, it is among the innovations that people have introduced, and it is one of the causes of shirk (associating partners with Allah). For these celebrations are among the causes of exaggeration toward the one being celebrated, to the point that he is called upon besides Allah, or sought for aid, and perhaps people rub themselves against his grave and circumambulate it. Thus, it is evil that leads to many evils. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.
