Is it permissible to celebrate the Mawlid?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
His second question says: I ask about the Mawlid of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When a person dies among us, after three days the family of the deceased holds a Mawlid for the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), or after a month they do it, or after a year they slaughter a cow, or buy meat and prepare food and distribute it to the village, and after that they hold the Mawlid of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Is this permissible, or is it a recommended practice, or did the Companions do this, or did anyone from the Salaf do it? We ask you to clarify this for us. May Allah reward you with good for the Muslims.
Answer: Celebrating the Mawlid is a religious innovation introduced into the religion, and there is no difference between the Mawlid of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and any other. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the best of creation, the teacher, and the advisor, did not celebrate his own Mawlid (peace and blessings be upon him). Likewise, his Rightly Guided Caliphs did not celebrate the Mawlid. Likewise, the rest of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction) are the most knowledgeable people and have the greatest love for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) compared to us. They are more knowledgeable about the Sunnah, and yet they did not celebrate the Mawlid. This indicates that it is a religious innovation, and all religious innovations are misguidance, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Every innovation is misguidance.كل بدعة ضلالة
. The three superior generations passed away without celebrating the Mawlid, and no one from the righteous Salaf did it. Thus, it is known that it is a religious innovation, and that this is something the people introduced after the superior generations. It is said that the first to introduce it were the rulers of Egypt from the Mamluks, who are, according to a group of historians, from the Shi'ah. They introduced it in the fourth century. It is also said that the first to introduce it was the King of Irbil. In any case, it is an innovation and a religious innovation with no basis. Some people, in some past centuries and in our time, have claimed that it is a recommended practice, that there is no harm in it, and that it is a good religious innovation. This is a defective statement with no basis; rather, it is defective. In reality, it is a contradiction of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, who are the most knowledgeable and best of people, and they did not do this religious innovation. It is obligatory to leave it. It is possible to study the Seerah in the scholarly circles, and in the daily and weekly lessons, so that people learn the Sunnah, the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and what he was upon in his deeds and words, just as they learn the rulings of the Shari'ah that he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. This is what is required in the school lessons, in the scholarly circles in the mosques, in the preaching and reminders. The Sunnah and the Seerah are taught there, and the Mawlid and what happened in the Mawlid are mentioned. All of this is possible, and it is sufficient and adequate. As for establishing Mawlid celebrations, setting up food tables and the like, this has no basis; rather, it is an introduced religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance. It is not befitting for a person of intellect to be deceived by the actions of people, for the actions of people are not a proof, and most people are not on the right path in matters of religion. Allah the Exalted said:
And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.وَمَا أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
[Yusuf: 103]. So the proof, the argument, and the evidence are [the Qur'an and Sunnah]. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. The study of the conditions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Seerah, and what happened in his Mawlid and his migration, all of this is done by scholars in the schools, in the scholarly circles, and in the reminders and sermons, without the need to establish the Mawlid celebrations that the innovators introduced. Sometimes, what occurs in them is shirk and exaggeration that only Allah knows. Types of shirk occur in them, and likewise, types of evils occur in them at times. Therefore, this door must be closed and this door must be blocked, and one should be content with the Islamic lessons in the mosques, in the circles of knowledge, and in the reminders and preaching in all matters of religion, and in everything related to the Sunnah and its rulings. This is the truth. What some people do today and before today, of celebrating the Mawlid of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or the Mawlid of al-Badawi, or Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, or so-and-so, or so-and-so, is all a religious innovation. It all has no basis, and it is obligatory to leave it, acting on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Every innovation is misguidance.كل بدعة ضلالة
