The Ruling on Wiping over Socks and Leather Socks

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We move on to another message and other topics. The message is from listener (A. K. M.), who is also Sudanese and resides in the northern part of the Kingdom. He asks a collection of questions, among which is a question about the ruling on wiping over socks, or wiping over shoes—may Allah reward you—and if some dirt is attached to them, is it permissible to pray in them?

Answer:
Wiping over leather socks and socks is the correct position and a recommended practice (sunnah) performed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). He said (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
When one of you performs ablution, then puts on his leather socks; let him wipe over themإذا توضأ أحدكم، فلبس خفيه؛ فليمسح عليهما
And he said in what Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) :
to wipe (over the Khuffs) for one day and one night for the resident, and three for the travelerيمسح المقيم يومًا وليلة، والمسافر ثلاثًا بلياليها
Sunan an-Nasa'i 129Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Likewise, Safwan ibn Asal narrated:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): ordered them, when they put on the leather socks in a state of purity, to wipe for one day and night for the resident, and for three days for the traveler and their nightsأن النبي ﷺ: أمرهم إذا لبسوا الخفاف على طهارة أن يمسحوا يومًا وليلة للمقيم، وثلاثة أيام للمسافر بلياليها
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did this:
used to wipe over his khuffainكان يمسح على الخفين
Musnad Ahmad 87Hasan (Darussalam)
.... In some of his travels (peace and blessings be upon him): he performed ablution and al-Mughirah was with him pouring water over him. When he wiped his head, al-Mughirah wanted to remove his leather socks, so he said:
He ordered me to leave them as he had put them after performing ablutionدعهما فإني أدخلتهما طاهرتين
Sahih al-Bukhari 206
So he wiped over them (peace and blessings be upon him).
The sock is of the same kind as the leather sock. The sock is made of wool, or cotton, or hair, or something else; it is of the same kind as the leather sock. The leather sock is made of leather, and the sock is made of something other than leather. The correct view is that it is permissible to wipe over the sock ........ if it covers the feet along with the ankles ... for one day and night for the resident, and for three days and their nights for the traveler.
And if the sock is inside the sandal and he wipes over both of them; there is no harm. But if he removes the sandal; he must remove the sock. As for if he wipes over the sock alone; then he may remove the sandal whenever he wishes, and the ruling is tied to the sock. He wipes for one day and night while resident, and for three days and their nights while traveling.
As for the sandal alone, it is not wiped over; because it does not cover. Rather, one wipes over the sock with the sandal. It is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the socks and the sandals (peace and blessings be upon him). So if he wipes over both of them; the ruling applies to both. He removes both of them and keeps both of them.
As for if he wipes over the sock alone; then the ruling applies to the sock, and the sandal may be removed whenever he wishes, and worn whenever he wishes. So if one day and night have passed over the sock on his foot after the state of ritual impurity, and after the wiping; he removes it.
And likewise, the leather sock starts from the wiping after the state of ritual impurity. So if one day and night have passed, twenty-four hours, meaning twenty-four hours have passed after the wiping, the first wiping over it after the state of ritual impurity, the time limit has been completed. And likewise, for the traveler, three days and their nights, meaning: seventy-two hours for the traveler. But it is necessary that they be worn in a state of purity, and it is necessary that the wearing be in the case of minor ritual impurity. As for major ritual impurity, no, one does not wipe. And likewise, the menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding do not wipe. Wiping is for minor ritual impurity. As for the one in a state of major ritual impurity, he removes them, the menstruating woman removes them, and the woman with post-natal bleeding removes them. It is not conceivable for the menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding; because there is no purity for them except after the full ritual bath.
So the result is that the sock is only wiped over for ablution. As for major ritual impurity, in the state of major ritual impurity, one does not remove it. Yes.
