Explaining the Virtue of Voluntary Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: Brother K. A. M. from Aleppo, Syria, says in his question:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to turn to prayer whenever a matter distressed himكان رسول الله ﷺ إذا حزبه أمر فزع إلى الصلاة
I would like to inquire about that prayer: is it an obligatory prayer? Or is it a voluntary prayer of supererogation? And what is the intention for such a prayer?

Answer: The prayer referred to here in this hadith is voluntary prayer; based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 153], so one seeks help from Allah in it regarding the matter that has distressed him. And success is from Allah.
