The ruling on a woman uncovering her face when traveling abroad
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question from the sisters Layla and Rima al-Qadi, in their last question, they say: If a woman travels abroad, what is the ruling on the hijab with the face uncovered?
Answer: A woman abroad is like one at home; she is not permitted to uncover her face. Rather, she must cover herself both at home and abroad. This is because Allah, Exalted and Majestic, said: [Al-Ahzab: 53], and He, the Exalted, said: [An-Nur: 31], the verse. Therefore, it is obligatory for them to cover themselves and wear the hijab absolutely, both at home and abroad. This is because men abroad are like men at home; there is fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) from them, and there is fear of fitnah for the women as well. So the conclusion is: home and abroad are the same regarding the obligation of the hijab.
Answer: A woman abroad is like one at home; she is not permitted to uncover her face. Rather, she must cover herself both at home and abroad. This is because Allah, Exalted and Majestic, said:
And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ ذَلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّnot expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers
وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ
