Ruling on purchasing religious magazines that contain images

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: His final question states: There are religious magazines known for their integrity and reform, but their flaw is that they contain images. Allah has opened up for me a generous sum of money, and I would like to obtain a large quantity of them. However, I remembered that angels do not enter a house that contains an image, and I am now confused about my situation, so guide us, may Allah reward you?
The answer: It appears that beneficial magazines should be purchased and distributed among people due to their great benefit, and the images contained in them do not prevent this, such as al-Mujtama' magazine, such as al-Da'wah magazine... and similar ones, al-Balagh magazine. These are useful and beneficial magazines, so one should not hesitate to purchase them because of the images. Rather, one should buy them and distribute them to those who need them and benefit from them. The images do not prevent the entry of angels in such cases, as they are covered; this is a covered image, covered by the papers on it, so it resembles images that are covered by a cloth over them, and resembles the images on bedding that is stepped on and trampled, and on pillows. So, if Allah wills, they do not prevent the entry of angels. However, as a precaution, it is recommended that he cover the heads with paint, meaning: he should wipe them with paint until the ruling regarding the images is removed; meaning, when the head is removed, the ruling of the image is removed. This is especially the case if it is on the cover, as this is exposed. If it is on the cover, it should be obscured by placing a piece of waxed paper over it, or a piece of waxed paper over the head, or removing the head with ink that erases the features of the head, or with some paint, and the ruling is removed. Yes.
In truth, this matter mentioned by the questioner is painful. It was not fitting for these good magazines to use images, because image-making is forbidden, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized this and said:
Everyone who makes representations of things will go to hellكل مصور في النار
Mishkat al-Masabih 4498
, and he said:
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of picturesأشد الناس عذاباً يوم القيامة المصورون
Sahih Muslim 2109a
, and he said to 'Ali:
Spare no portrait unwiped outلا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
. So it was not fitting for those who publish these good magazines to place images. My advice to all of them is not to place them, and to leave out the images, so that these magazines are sound and good, far from this trend in which people have fallen. This is my advice to my brothers in da'wah, and in al-Mujtama' and al-Balagh and others. My advice to all of them is not to place images in them. Also, if they write an article by someone, they should not place his image without his permission, and even if he gives permission, it is not recommended to photograph him according to the correct view. Even if he gives permission, they should not photograph him. I am distressed by anyone who quotes an article from me and places my image. I do not forgive him, and I do not permit him to place my image. Anyone who writes about me, I am distressed that he places my image, and I am not pleased with it, because I believe that image-making is not permissible absolutely. So I say to everyone who quotes from me in any magazine or any newspaper: I do not permit it and I do not forgive him for placing my image. This is what I say to all my brothers, and I advise all my brothers with this, and I convey to them through this platform that I am not pleased for my image to be placed with any article or fatwa published about me. This is my belief. And although image-making may be needed by some people, such as for a national ID, a passport, or a driver's license, that is a different matter. It may be said that the owner is in dire necessity or coerced, and he is excused if Allah wills, because he is compelled to have a national ID and the like. But transferring articles in newspapers, there is no dire necessity to place the image of the owner. The owner of the article is known even if his image is not placed. Yes.
The presenter: This message is from the sender Ibrahim Hussein al-Huwayti from Jeddah, Central Post. In truth, he did not include questions in his message, but rather it is a consultation. He says in this message, Brother Ibrahim Hussein al-Huwayti from Jeddah: Is it possible to correspond with the program and present their inquiries regarding religious matters that concern them? He fears that we will not be able to read his handwriting, and indeed the handwriting is poor for the reasons he mentioned. But Brother Ibrahim should shorten the question as much as possible, or ask one of his relatives or friends to write his questions so that we can present them in the manner he desires. We are ready and welcome him and his questions. And in truth, I sat for a whole night to extract these simple words.
