The Virtue of Eating the Pre-Dawn Meal
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! We have received a large number of letters, and we begin with a letter from Sa'ud ibn Muhammad al-Mutayri. He says: We often hear about the pre-dawn meal (suhur) in the blessed month of Ramadan, and we hear in the hadiths delivered in the mosques that the pre-dawn meal is a blessing. However, sometimes we do not feel like eating breakfast because of the late night prayer (Isha), and we leave this blessing. Is there any sin on us for that, or not? May Allah guide you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his companions, and whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: There is no doubt that the pre-dawn meal is a recommended practice (sunnah) and an act of drawing near to Allah; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it. He said:, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 709Sahih (Darussalam). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat the pre-dawn meal. So the recommended practice is to eat the pre-dawn meal, but it is not obligatory. If one does not eat the pre-dawn meal, there is no sin on him, but he has left the recommended practice. He should eat the pre-dawn meal, even if it is a little. It is not necessary for it to be a large amount. He should eat whatever is easy for him, even if it is just a few dates or whatever is available of food at the end of the night. If nothing is available or he does not feel like eating, he should drink some milk, or at least water. He should drink as much water as is easy for him, and not leave the pre-dawn meal. For in the pre-dawn meal there is a blessing, and in it is much good, and it is assistance for the fasting person in his deeds during the day. The fasting person should not leave the pre-dawn meal, even if it is a little, because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 1692Sahih (Darussalam). This is what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. And this blessing should not be lost. Rather, the believer should strive for it, even with a little food, or dates, or milk; he should seek assistance through it for his religious and worldly deeds during the day. Yes.
