The Ruling on Water That Comes into Contact with Impurity

May Allah reward you. The letter before us says its sender is Ali Nasser Yemani: I submit this letter to Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz. The first question: If I place the clothes in which I had a wet dream, which contain semen, in a large basin or in the washing machine, and during the washing process some drops of this water fall on me and my clothes, do I and my clothes become ritually impure? Is one wash sufficient? And what is the amount of the two qullahs?
Answer: Know, my brother, that semen is pure and not impure. So if you place the garment containing semen in a large basin or elsewhere, and some spray from the washing flies off, it does not harm you and is not impure. Semen is originally... it is the origin of the human being, and it is pure. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) would sometimes scrape it off the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without washing it. If it had been impure, it would have required washing. So the point is: the correct view is that it is merely pure and not impure, so the spray that falls during its washing does not harm. Likewise, water whose impurity you do not know is originally pure; this is the original ruling for all water, purity, except what you know to be impure; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 67Sahih (Al-Albani).
The two qullahs were explained as being approximately five water skins. It was also said that the two qullahs are each the amount that a man of average build can carry. So they are close to five water skins approximately. This is the meaning of what the scholars said about the two qullahs. The scholars differed: do the two qullahs and what approximates them become impure merely by contact, or is a change required?
The correct view is that water does not become impure except by change. This is the position of the most precise scholars. Water does not become impure except by change. If its taste, color, or smell changes due to impurity, it becomes impure; otherwise, it does not become impure merely by contact with a small amount of impurity that does not affect it in any way, even if it is less than the two qullahs. Except for what is small and excused, like what falls into customary vessels. This should be poured out if impurity falls into it, even if it does not change it; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): This and similar things indicate that if a small amount of impurity falls into a customary vessel, meaning: it does not change its color, smell, or taste, it is poured out, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the pouring out of the vessel in which a dog licked; because it is usually affected by what falls into it, even if no sign of change appears in smell, color, or taste. But usually, a small vessel changes. As for what is large, approximating the two qullahs or close to that, it does not become impure except by change. But if one leaves that for the sake of precaution, for example, he has water that suffices him for that and leaves using what impurity fell into that did not change it and is less than the two qullahs, this is from the category of precaution and from the category of scrupulousness, from the category of Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam).
So the conclusion from this is: the two qullahs, which are approximately five water skins according to the scholars, do not become impure except by change. And what is less than the two qullahs becomes impure by contact according to a group of scholars. And the correct view is that all of it does not become impure except by change in taste, color, or smell. If it does not change, it remains in its purity. Except for the small thing that is in vessels; if impurity falls into it, even if it does not change it, the better course is to pour it out, acting on the authentic hadith in which it says:” And Muslim narrated it in the Sahih. Yes.
