The Permissibility of Striking Children for Their Discipline

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: He also asks: Is it lawful or forbidden to strike my brothers and curse them in order to discipline them, and how did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raise his children?
The Shaykh: Raising brothers and children is an obligatory matter. Striking them and directing them toward good is an obligatory matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Order your children to pray at seven years of age, and beat them for it at tenمروا أولادكم بالصلاة لسبع، واضربوهم عليها لعشر
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 3:5
Therefore, striking children and younger brothers and directing them toward good is a necessary duty for you if you are the one responsible for them. As for cursing, no, do not curse them. Rather, speak to them with kind words, warn them, and use words that deter them without cursing: “O enemy of yourself,” “O wrongdoer to yourself,” “O such-and-such,” “O such-and-such,” using words that do not contain cursing. This is to be done along with reprimanding them and striking them with a strike that does not harm them, a non-severe strike that achieves the purpose of directing them to good and preventing them from evil. As for cursing, such as saying “May Allah curse you” or “May Allah disgrace you,” this is not permissible. As for other expressions like “O donkey!” or “O dog!” or “O such-and-such,” it is better to avoid these words as well, because they are harsh and may lead to consequences that are not praiseworthy. Therefore, it is better to leave them and use words other than these: “O enemy of yourself,” “O wrongdoer to yourself,” “O such-and-such,” from words that do not wound feelings or cause problems.
