The Ruling on Boycotting Between Brothers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Muhammad Ahmad Abdullah Shamrani in Jeddah sent this message, saying: I have a brother who is the eldest among us. We are seven in number, and the youngest is thirty-five years old, while he, the eldest, is forty-nine years old. Our father and mother have passed away, and he has been harming them, even to the point of beating them; if he did not fear the consequences, he would have beaten them. Our father and mother died angry with him, and we are angry with him as well. We have cut off visiting him, and it has been about seven years since we last visited him. He is fasting and praying, but he speaks ill of us, calling us "my brothers" or "my sisters." Is there a sin on us or not? May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon you.
Answer: There is no doubt that with this action, he has wronged his parents and his brothers. It is obligatory for him to have good character, to refrain from being arrogant toward his brothers, to stop harming them, and to stop speaking ill of them. As for what he did to his parents, there is no doubt that it is an ugly action. He must repent to Allah for it, seek forgiveness, and make du'a for his parents, so that perhaps Allah will accept his repentance and have mercy on him.
As for you, my brothers, you should strive to maintain ties with him and make du'a for his success and guidance, so that you may be better than he is. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.ليس الواصل بالمكافي، ولكن الواصل الذي إذا قطعت رحمه وصلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
So you are encouraged to earn reward by visiting him, greeting him, making du'a for his success and guidance, and advising him to repent to Allah, make du'a for his parents, and seek forgiveness for what he did to his parents. This is what is required of you. If he rejects you and refuses to greet you, then you are excused, and the sin is on him. As for you, you should visit him, greet him, and invite him to visit you and to a feast at your home, so that his heart may soften and the estrangement between you may be removed, if Allah wills. If he refuses, does not agree, and persists in boycotting you or insulting you, then you are excused, and the sin is on him. You are not required to visit him after that. And Allah knows best. Yes.
