The Ruling on the Zakah of Jewelry and How to Pay It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received by the program from the Holy City of Madinah, sent by one of the female listeners who indicated her name with the letters (A. S.). The sister has a set of questions, among which is a question that says: Is it permissible to pay the zakah on worn gold at the price for which it was purchased?
Answer: There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding the original issue: is it obligatory to pay zakah on the jewelry a woman wears, or is it exempt from her? This is a point of disagreement among the scholars, and the correct view is that it is obligatory to pay zakah on the jewelry; because the evidence indicating this is free from contradiction and is strong and authentic.
Therefore, it is obligatory for a woman to pay zakah from her jewelry if it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it, whether the jewelry is bracelets, necklaces, or other types of jewelry. If it reaches the nisab, which is twenty mithqals of gold, its amount in Saudi riyals is: eleven and a half riyals, meaning: eleven and a half riyals, and in grams: ninety-two grams. If this amount is reached, zakah becomes obligatory; if it is less, zakah is not obligatory on it. This is all in accordance with the evidence, according to the stronger opinion in this issue, even if it is worn, and even if she is wearing it. However, the zakah is not calculated based on the purchase price; the value is taken into account. For example, if she bought jewelry for ten thousand riyals, and at the end of the lunar year it is worth only eight thousand, she does not pay zakah on more than eight thousand because it decreased. And the reverse is the same: if she bought it for ten thousand and at the end of the lunar year it is worth fifteen thousand because the gold increased in value, she pays zakah on fifteen thousand. It is the value that exists at the end of the lunar year, whether it has increased or decreased. Yes.
The presenter: But the zakah, O Shaykh, is from the same item being taxed, or is there no objection to paying its value?
The Shaykh: It is not obligatory. Even from the known paper, paper currency, or from silver, there is no harm. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
