The Ruling on the Zakah of Jewelry and How to Pay It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says, “O Noble Shaykh: I bought gold that reached the nisab in the month of Safar, and then I bought more gold that also reached the nisab in the month of Ramadan. How do I pay the zakah? Is there zakah on used gold?”

Answer:
The correct view is that there is zakah on jewelry; this is the stronger position. So, what you bought in Safar, you pay its zakah when Safar comes around, and what you bought in Ramadan, you pay its zakah when Ramadan comes around. Each item is subject to zakah once a lunar year has passed over it. The gold from Safar is subject to zakah in Safar once a lunar year has passed, and the gold from Ramadan is subject to zakah in Ramadan, provided it reaches the nisab. The nisab is eleven and a half pounds, or eleven pounds and three-sevenths of a pound, which is twenty mithqals of gold. So, if the gold you owned in Safar reaches the nisab, you pay its zakah, and you add to it the gold you owned in Ramadan, which is subject to zakah when Ramadan arrives. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah preserve you.
