Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
After this, we move on to another message sent by a listener from the Tabuk region, whose name is Saleh Abdulaziz al-Sha'ay: I was one of those who used to smoke, and Allah ﷽ granted me the ability to quit, and I did. However, while I was still smoking, I made a vow to Allah that if I stopped smoking, I would slaughter two sheep for Allah the Exalted. It has now been two years since I quit, and I have not fulfilled the vow due to my poor financial circumstances. What do you advise me to do? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
We advise you to fulfill the vow. Allah says:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[Surat al-Taghabun: 16] And He the Exalted says:
And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] easeوَإِنْ كَانَ ذُو عُسْرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ إِلَى مَيْسَرَةٍ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 280] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Himمن نذر أن يطيع الله؛ فليطعه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
You vowed to obey Allah by slaughtering the sheep, so you must slaughter it whenever it becomes easy for you, at any time when it is feasible for you to slaughter it, and distribute its meat to the poor. Yes; thank Allah for the repentance.
