Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of the female listeners, signed by a listener from Riyadh. She says in her message: A woman’s husband traveled, so she vowed to fast for three consecutive months upon his return, and to slaughter three sacrificial animals. After he returned from his trip, she did not fulfill the vow, and now nearly a year has passed. Due to her circumstances and the care of her children, she was unable to fast for three consecutive months, nor to slaughter the animals. Her question is: What must she do? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
It is obligatory for this woman who made the vow to fulfill her vow of fasting and slaughtering, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam) And Allah has praised those who fulfill their vows, saying the Exalted: [Al-Insan:7] This is among the characteristics of the people of faith and piety: fulfilling the vow of obedience. So she must fast for three consecutive months, and she must slaughter three sacrificial animals when she is able. The obligation remains in her liability, staying in her liability until she is able.
So when she is able to slaughter the animals, she slaughters them, even if separately, one at a time, distributed to the poor and those in need. And when she is able to fast, she fasts at the time she is able. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. He the Exalted says: [Al-Taghabun:16].
So when she is able to fast, she fasts; otherwise, it remains in her liability, pending until she is able. And so with the sacrificial animals. We advise the woman who made the vow, and others, not to return to making vows... Vows are not recommended. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 3426.
So the advice to all who listen to this program, the advice to everyone, is not to make vows, in any of their forms. A vow does not change the divine decree, nor does it bring good, but it extracts from the miser.Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 May Allah guide them all. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
