What is the ruling on the worshippers standing for prayer before the imam?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Okay, no problem. If the mu'adhdhin says "the prayer has begun" and the worshippers stand before the imam stands, is there any blame on them?

The Shaykh : This varies depending on the imam. The Messenger (peace be upon him) used to say:
do not stand up until you see me لا تقوموا حتى تروني
Sunan an-Nasa'i 790Sahih (Darussalam)
when the mu'adhdhin calls.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Or when the iqamah is called, then
do not stand up until you see me لا تقوموا حتى تروني
Sunan an-Nasa'i 790Sahih (Darussalam)
If the imam has not yet arrived, the worshippers do not stand. However, if the imam is in the place of prayer—and I do not say in the mihrab, because the mihrab has no basis in the Sunnah—if he is in the place of prayer, it is clear. So, whenever they stand, it is permissible, whether before the iqamah of the prayer or after the iqamah of the prayer. There is no rule for the worshippers standing for the prayer when the prayer is established except by seeing the imam. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : If Allah wills.
