Question:
The first message in this episode is from a listener named Mustawr Hamid Abdullah al-Sawt from the southern region. Our brother Mustawr sent a large collection of questions. In one of them, he asks about the exegesis of the Verse of the Throne. If you would permit it, Your Eminence, please provide him with its exegesis?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The Verse of the Throne is the greatest verse in the Book of Allah, as stated by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). It is His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) : [al-Baqarah:255]. This is the Verse of the Throne. It is a long verse and the greatest verse in the Book of Allah. It contains great meanings regarding the oneness of Allah, affirming His names and attributes, and the comprehensiveness of His knowledge and power (Exalted and Majestic is He). So His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): [al-Baqarah:255]. This is the meaning of the word of tawhid: "There is no god but Allah." Its meaning is: Allah, there is no god but He, meaning: there is no true object of worship but He. Allah, there is no true object of worship other than Him. The ilah is the one who is worshipped, and ta'alah is worship.
The meaning of "La ilaha" is: there is no one who is worshipped, and "al-ma'lud" means the one who is worshipped, that is, there is no true object of worship except Allah, who is the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining the Ever-Living who does not die, and no drowsiness, which is slumber, nor sleep, which is what is above slumber, overtakes Him, due to the perfection of His life, so there is no sleep, no death, no slumber, and no heedlessness, but rather He is at the peak of knowledge, power, and insight into the conditions of the servants : [al-Baqarah:255] He is Alive with a complete life, in which there is no deficiency, no weakness, no heedlessness, no sleep, no slumber, no death, or any other such affliction.
And He is al-Qayyum, the One who stands over the affairs of His servants, and the One who sustains them, Exalted is He, and He is the One who sustains His creations, and He is the One who preserves His creations, so there is no sustenance for the servants, nor for the creations, except through Him He is the One who established the heavens, and established the earth, and established everything, as He, Exalted is He, said: [al-Rum:25] He is the One who sustains the creatures, preserves them, brings them into existence, and annihilates them; so He is All-Able over all things For this reason, He said after that: [al-Baqarah:255] meaning: no drowsiness, which is slumber, which is light sleep, nor sleep, which is heavy sleep, overtakes Him, so no heedlessness, no slumber, no sleep, and no death overtakes Him, but rather His life is complete .
Then He said, peace and blessings be upon him : [al-Baqarah:255] meaning: He is the Owner of everything, He is the Owner of the sky and what is in it, and the earth and what is in it, as He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), said at the end of Surat al-Ma'idah: [al-Ma'idah:120] And He said in another verse [al-Shura:49] So He, Exalted is He, is the Owner of the heavens and the Owner of the earth, and the Owner of what is in them, and the Owner of everything, (Exalted and Majestic is He).
Then He, Exalted is He, said: [al-Baqarah:255] meaning: no one is able to intercede except by His permission, Exalted is He, meaning: on the Day of Resurrection, no one will step forward to intercede, not even the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), except by His permission, until He grants him permission, and that is only because of the greatness of His status and His might, and because He, Exalted is He, is the One who deserves to be magnified and glorified, and that no one should step forward before Him except by His permission : .
So Allah will judge between His servants by his intercession, and after the judgment, the people of Paradise will go to Paradise, and the people of the Fire will go to the Fire: [al-Shura:7] And the people of Paradise will be stopped, not entering it until he intercedes for them - (peace and blessings be upon him) - so he will intercede for the people of Paradise until their gates are opened for them by his intercession - (peace and blessings be upon him) - As for in this world, every person calls upon his Lord, and is commanded to make du'a, as He, the Exalted, said: [Ghafir:60] That he calls upon his Lord, and asks his Lord to forgive him, and admit him to Paradise, and save him from the Fire, and he asks his brothers to make du'a for him, that Allah forgive him, there is no harm in this, but on the Day of Resurrection, no one steps forward except by His permission The prophets and others, no one intercedes except by His permission : [al-Baqarah:255] He, the Exalted, said: [al-Najm:26] And He, the Exalted, said: [al-Anbiya:28].
So intercession is only for those whose words and deeds Allah is pleased with, and they are the people of tawhid and faith. They are the ones for whom the prophets intercede. As for the people of shirk, there is no intercession for them, as He (the Exalted) said: [al-Muddaththir:48]. He (the Exalted) said: [Ghafir:18]. "The wrongdoers" means: the polytheists. The meaning of "the wrongdoers" is: the polytheists. When "wrongdoing" is used in a general sense, it is shirk: [Luqman:13]. So the meaning of His (Glorified and Exalted is He) saying: [Ghafir:18] is: what do the polytheists have [Ghafir:18]. So the polytheist is not benefited by intercession, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or the believers do not intercede for him. Rather, he has only the Fire on the Day of Resurrection (we seek refuge in Allah from that). And intercession is for the people of tawhid and faith, and for the sinners among the monotheists. As for intercession at the standing place, it is general for all the people of the standing place, including the disbelievers and others, in that judgment is made between them. This is a general intercession in the judgment between people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intercedes for them for the judgment between them. So Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) judges between them with His just judgment (Exalted and Majestic is He), as mentioned previously.
Then He, Exalted is He, said:[Al-Baqarah 2:255] : [al-Anfal:75] And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Baqarah 2:255] As for Him, He is the All-Knowing of the conditions of all His servants, past and future, He knows their conditions, what they did, what they died upon, and what they have in the Hereafter, He knows everything He, the Exalted, said: [al-Talaq:12] And He, Exalted is He, said: [al-Anfal:75] And He says here: [al-Baqarah:255] So they do not know what is with Him except by His teaching By His revealing it to them through the hands of the messengers - (peace and blessings be upon them) - or by what Allah brings about for them in this world of creations, provisions, and things He reveals to them .
Then He said: [al-Baqarah:255] The Kursi: a created, immense thing above the seventh heaven, other than the Throne, Ibn Abbas said: the feet of the Lord, peace and blessings be upon him And some of the people of knowledge said: it is the Throne; because the Throne is called a Kursi, and the famous opinion is the first: that it is a created, immense thing above the seventh heaven, other than the Throne which is the Throne of Allah, Exalted is He meaning above Him, peace and blessings be upon him mentioned in His saying, Exalted is He: [Ta-Ha:5] And in His saying, (Exalted and Majestic is He): [al-A'raf:54] In seven places in the Book of Allah, in which His rising above the Throne is mentioned And it is a created, immense thing, which has encompassed the creations, and it is their ceiling, He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), said about it: [al-Haqqah:17] meaning: on the Day of Resurrection.
[al-Baqarah:255] meaning: it does not burden the Lord, nor weigh Him down, nor is it difficult for Him to preserve the creations He is the Preserver of the heavens, and He is the Preserver of the earth and what is in them, and that does not burden Him, nor weigh Him down, nor is it difficult for Him Because He is All-Able over all things, for this reason He, Exalted is He, said: [al-Baqarah:255] meaning: it does not burden Him, nor weigh Him down, nor is it difficult for Him, but rather He is All-Able over all things .
[al-Baqarah:255] He has absolute elevation, elevation of essence above the Throne, and elevation of dominion and authority, and elevation of honor and status So He has complete elevation So He is the Most High above all His creation - (Exalted and Majestic is He) - above the Throne, and He is the Most High in terms of the perfection of His names and attributes, His authority and His power - (Exalted and Majestic is He) - and He has honor and excellence, so He is the best thing, and the most honorable of them So He has elevation of dominion and authority, elevation of honor and status, and elevation of place above the Throne, He, the Exalted, said: [Ghafir:12] And He, the Exalted, said here: [al-Baqarah:255] So He is the Most High above all His creation, All-Able over all things, the Great in authority, the One who disposes of His servants as He wills, and He is the Great, of whom there is none greater, so He has complete greatness So there is none greater than Him, nor greater, nor more knowing, nor more able .
This great verse contains these great attributes, and for this reason it became the best verse in the Book of Allah and the greatest verse in the Book of Allah; because it included these great meanings and the great descriptions of the Lord that He is the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth but Him, that He is perfect in life, that no drowsiness or sleep overtakes Him, that He is the Owner of everything, that He is the Knower of everything, that the preservation of His creations does not weary Him, nor is it difficult for Him, rather He is Able to do everything and that His Footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth and that no one intercedes with Him except by His permission, due to the perfection of His power and the perfection of His greatness, and that He is the Most High in absolute height, in the height of His Essence, the height of His dominion and authority, and the height of His honor and status, and He is the Magnificent, none is more magnificent than Him Magnificent in His Essence, Magnificent in His names and attributes and His actions, the Subduer above His servants, as He said -Exalted and Majestic is He-: [Al-An'am:18] and He is the One who said -Exalted and Majestic is He-: [Al-Baqarah:20] and He said, Glorified is He: [Al-Kahf:45].
And by this, every believer, male and female, knows the greatness of the status of this verse, and that it is a great verse containing great attributes, and for this reason it has truly become the greatest verse in the Book of Allah by the text of the Chosen One Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and success is from Allah.

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence
The meaning of "La ilaha" is: there is no one who is worshipped, and "al-ma'lud" means the one who is worshipped, that is, there is no true object of worship except Allah, who is the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining the Ever-Living who does not die, and no drowsiness, which is slumber, nor sleep, which is what is above slumber, overtakes Him, due to the perfection of His life, so there is no sleep, no death, no slumber, and no heedlessness, but rather He is at the peak of knowledge, power, and insight into the conditions of the servants :
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence
And He is al-Qayyum, the One who stands over the affairs of His servants, and the One who sustains them, Exalted is He, and He is the One who sustains His creations, and He is the One who preserves His creations, so there is no sustenance for the servants, nor for the creations, except through Him He is the One who established the heavens, and established the earth, and established everything, as He, Exalted is He, said:
And of His signs is that the heaven and earth remain by His command
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
Then He said, peace and blessings be upon him :
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And He is over all things competent.
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth
Then He, Exalted is He, said:
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
When the distress becomes severe for the people on the Day of Resurrection, the believers will turn to their father Adam to intercede for them with Allah until He judges between them. Adam will make excuses, then he will refer them to Noah. They will come to Noah, and he will make excuses (peace be upon him) and say: "Go to Abraham." They will come to Abraham, and he will make excuses and say: "Go to Moses." They will come to Moses, and he will make excuses, and each one will say: "Myself, myself." Then Moses will say to them: "Go to Jesus." They will come to Jesus, and he will say: "Myself, myself. Go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." They will come to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he will say: "I am the one for it" (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he will step forward and prostrate before his Lord, praising Him with great praises and extolling Him, Glorified is He, with praises He will open for him. Then it will be said to him: "O Muhammad! Raise your head, ask and you will be given, and intercede and you will be granted intercession." At that time, he will intercede (peace and blessings be upon him) for the people so that Allah will judge between them
So Allah will judge between His servants by his intercession, and after the judgment, the people of Paradise will go to Paradise, and the people of the Fire will go to the Fire:
A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze.
Call upon Me; I will respond to you.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
وَكَمْ مِنْ مَلَكٍ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ لا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَىand they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves
So intercession is only for those whose words and deeds Allah is pleased with, and they are the people of tawhid and faith. They are the ones for whom the prophets intercede. As for the people of shirk, there is no intercession for them, as He (the Exalted) said:
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
There is no protector for the wrongdoers
مَا لِلظَّالِمِينَno devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
Then He, Exalted is He, said:
He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them
Allah is Knowing of all things.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌand they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills
ولا يحيطون بشيء من علمه إلا بما شاءso you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.
Allah is Knowing of all things.
He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
Then He said:
His Kursi (the Footstool) encompasses the heavens and the earth
It is the place of the feet
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne
And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَةٌand their preservation tires Him not
وَلا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَاand their preservation tires Him not
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
So the judgement is with Allah, the Most High, the Grand."
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
This great verse contains these great attributes, and for this reason it became the best verse in the Book of Allah and the greatest verse in the Book of Allah; because it included these great meanings and the great descriptions of the Lord that He is the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth but Him, that He is perfect in life, that no drowsiness or sleep overtakes Him, that He is the Owner of everything, that He is the Knower of everything, that the preservation of His creations does not weary Him, nor is it difficult for Him, rather He is Able to do everything and that His Footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth and that no one intercedes with Him except by His permission, due to the perfection of His power and the perfection of His greatness, and that He is the Most High in absolute height, in the height of His Essence, the height of His dominion and authority, and the height of His honor and status, and He is the Magnificent, none is more magnificent than Him Magnificent in His Essence, Magnificent in His names and attributes and His actions, the Subduer above His servants, as He said -Exalted and Majestic is He-:
And He is the subjugator over His servants
Indeed, Allah is over all things competent
And Allah was Able over all things
And by this, every believer, male and female, knows the greatness of the status of this verse, and that it is a great verse containing great attributes, and for this reason it has truly become the greatest verse in the Book of Allah by the text of the Chosen One Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and success is from Allah.
