Question:
A message was received by the program from the Iraqi Republic, sent by a listener there named Khalid Abdullah Hasan. Brother Khalid has a set of questions, among which is one that says: I have heard of the Wahhabis, so who are they?
Answer:
The Wahhabis are the followers of the Shaykh and Imam: Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn Sulayman ibn 'Ali al-Tamimi al-Hanbali, who passed away in the year 1206 of the Hijrah. His death, may Allah have mercy on him, was in the year 1206 of the Hijrah in al-Dar'iyyah, and his grave is well known there. He engaged in calling people to Allah in the second half of the twelfth century in Najd, al-Dar'iyyah, and the surrounding areas. He called for the oneness of Allah and refuted the people's attachment to graves, the dead, and idols, as well as their belief in fortune-tellers and astrologers, and the worship of trees and stones, following the way of the righteous predecessors, in the manner in which Allah sent His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and in the manner followed by his Companions. So he called to Allah, and with him called the scholars whom Allah guided to know the truth, from among his relatives, his children, and others. Allah made the religion manifest through him and removed evil from Najd and its surroundings. Then his call spread to Yemen, the Levant, Iraq, Egypt, India, and elsewhere.
The discerning scholars recognized the truth and uprightness of his call, and that he was on guidance and the straight path, and that in reality he was a renewer of what had been lost of the markers of Islam, and not an innovator. He did not have a new religion, nor a new school of jurisprudence; rather, he called for the oneness of Allah, following His Shari'ah, and walking in the methodology of the righteous predecessors from the Companions and those who followed their path. This is the school of the Wahhabis. They walked in the methodology of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his followers from the Companions, and those after them from the people of knowledge and faith.
But they have opponents, so the liars lied about them so that they might make their blood lawful. They lied about them and said: They are a fifth school of jurisprudence, and that they insult the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and insult the Companions. All of this is a lie, all of it is invalid. Rather, they are among the people who love the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) the most, and they are on the path of the Companions. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is dearer to them than their own selves, their children, and their wealth. And they call to what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) called to: the oneness of Allah, following His Shari'ah, revering His commands and prohibitions, and walking in the methodology of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Their books are replete with this. The books of Shaykh Muhammad and his followers are clear in this. Whoever reads them will know that. The book *Tawhid*, *Fath al-Majid*, *Kashf al-Shubuhat*, *The Three Fundamental Principles*, and also *Taysir al-'Aziz al-Hamid* by his grandson Sulayman ibn 'Abdullah, and also *al-Durar al-Saniyyah fi Fatawa Ahl al-Najd* are clear in this.
And so their other books and their other letters all clarify what they are upon of guidance and truth, and all of them clarify the lies of their enemies and opponents from the Sufis, and non-Sufis, and the worshippers of graves who lied about them; because they refuted the worship of graves for them, so they lied about them. Their opponents are the worshippers of graves, or ignorant people who did not know the truth and believed the worshippers of graves.
As for the people of knowledge and faith in Egypt, the Levant, Iraq, and elsewhere, they recognized the truth of what they are upon and testified to them with the truth, such as Shaykh Muhammad Rashid Rida, and others who knew their call, may Allah have mercy on them, and those who testified to them with the truth from the scholars of Islam in Egypt, the Levant, Iraq, and elsewhere. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
The presenter : So, would publishing their books not remove this confusion, O Shaykh?
The Shaykh : Without a doubt, and they have been published, and praise be to Allah, they have spread throughout the lands and disseminated by the praise of Allah. Yes.
The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
