Question:
The sister (J. N. Q.) from Riyadh sent a message containing a collection of questions, among which was a question asking: What is the ruling on wearing a ring on the index or middle finger? We have heard people say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it. And what is the ruling on writing (peace and blessings be upon him) with a single letter, or with four letters, namely (Sallama)?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited wearing a ring on the middle finger and the index finger. It appears—and Allah knows best—that he intended this to apply to men. As for women, they have adornment in everything. It appears—and what appears to us, and Allah knows best—that the intended meaning is men.
As for writing S or Sallama, this should not be done. At the very least, it is disliked. In fact, the recommended practice is to pray upon the Prophet by writing it out in full, and Allah will write for him ten blessings for itSahih Muslim 408.
So the recommended practice for the believer, when he speaks, is to say (peace and blessings be upon him) when mentioning Muhammad (may Allah send prayers and peace upon him). And when he writes his name, he should write (peace and blessings be upon him) in the writing, in books and letters. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him. Yes.
