Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a question from a questioner in Syria (M. S.) who asks: Does a Muslim make up the prayer that he missed intentionally, when he did so deliberately and on purpose? What is required of him in this case, and does he make up what he missed? May Allah reward you.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The matter of prayer is great; it is the pillar of Islam and the second of the pillars of Islam. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [al-Baqarah: 238]. And He the Exalted said: [al-Nur: 56]. And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [al-'Ankabut: 45]. The verses regarding the command of prayer are very numerous.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2616Hasan (Darussalam) And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5001Sahih (Darussalam) meaning: upon five pillars: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2609Sahih (Darussalam) And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Muslim narrated it in his Sahih from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam) Imam Ahmad and the people of the Sunan narrated it with a sound chain from Buraydah .
The one who deliberately abandons prayer commits disbelief thereby—may Allah grant us safety—from the correct view, even if he does not deny its obligation. As for if he denies its obligation, he commits disbelief according to all scholars, even if he prays. If he says that it is not obligatory, he is a disbeliever according to all scholars of knowledge, even if he prays.
But if he is lazy, knowing that it is obligatory, aware that it is obligatory, acknowledging it, but being lazy and not praying; this is also disbelief according to the correct view, because of these previous hadiths. So if Allah accepts his repentance, he owes no making up of prayers. If Allah accepts his repentance, he starts anew, prays anew, and he owes no making up if he abandoned it deliberately and transgressively. As for if he was forgetful or sleeping, he makes it up. As for if he abandoned it deliberately and negligently, he must repent, and he owes no making up. If he makes it up, there is no harm, but he owes no making up. Yes.
