Question:
A message was received by the program from the Iraqi Republic, signed by one of the listeners from there, stating: Your sister (S. M.) has a number of questions, among which is one that asks: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding a woman going out to work, earning a livelihood, and mixing with men and speaking to them due to the nature of her job, given that she is observant, veiled, and knows the limits of Allah?
Answer:
There is nothing wrong with her going out to work to seek a lawful livelihood in women's establishments, or in separate establishments where there is no danger. All of this is permissible, such as sewing, or being a doctor, or other such jobs. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has prescribed for us seeking a livelihood, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2664 A person is commanded to seek a livelihood. Allah says: [Al-'Ankabut: 17] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2664 This applies to both men and women.
However, it is not permissible for her to be in a place where there is danger among men, or in a place where she does not feel safe because of the men around her; because they are suspected of taking advantage of her. She should not put herself at risk; being in a safe place is fine. But being among men in their work, such that she mixes with them and interacts with them; this is not permissible; because her presence with them is a trial, even with veiling, because physical contact, mixing, and constant and frequent sitting together are a cause of evil.
So if she is in a private place, or in a women's job with women; there is nothing wrong with it. But being with the male teachers as a teacher among the male teachers, or a worker among the workers, going with them and coming with them, carrying stones or bricks with them, and mixing with them in their going and coming; this poses a danger to her.
So it is obligatory to be cautious of that; because this mixing may lead to a trial, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded her to stay away from the causes of trial. He forbade seclusion with a non-mahram (peace and blessings be upon him), and he forbade tabarruj (a woman's display of her adornment). Mixing may lead to seclusion, and it may lead to tabarruj and displaying some of the adornment. Yes.
