Is it forbidden for men to shake hands with women?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener from Sudan, Yusuf Muhammad Ali al-Qa'id, sent a question asking: What is your opinion—may Allah preserve you—regarding shaking hands with women? Is it forbidden, or is it disliked?

Answer:
The correct view is that it is forbidden, and it is more severe than looking. Touching her hand may cause a greater trial than mere looking, as some scholars have explicitly stated. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
But I do not shake hands with women.إني لا أصافح النساء
Sunan Ibn Majah 2874Sahih (Darussalam)
His status in the religion is well known—(peace and blessings be upon him)—he was the most God-fearing of people, the most noble of people, the best of people, and the most perfect in faith. And yet, no. He said:
I do not shake hands with womenلا أصافح النساء
And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
By Allah, the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never touched the hand of a woman. He only pledged allegiance with them through speech.والله ما مست يد رسول الله ﷺ يد امرأة قط، ما كان يبايعهن إلا بالكلام
.
It is not permissible for a man to shake hands with a non-mahram woman, whether she is his paternal cousin, his brother’s wife, or another non-mahram. He has no right to shake hands with anyone except his mahram, such as his maternal aunt, paternal aunt, or daughter; there is no harm in that. He may shake hands with mahram women. As for a non-mahram woman, even if she is his brother’s wife, his wife’s sister, her paternal aunt, or her maternal aunt, no, he does not shake hands with her. As for her mother, there is no harm; her mother and her grandmother are mahram. Her daughter is mahram if he has consummated the marriage with her mother. Her daughter’s daughter, and his son’s daughter, are mahram if he has consummated the marriage with the mother. Her mother, her grandmother, and her grandmothers are mahram; there is no harm in shaking hands with them. As for her sister, her paternal aunt, and her maternal aunts, they are not mahram. He has no right to shake hands with them, nor is it permissible for him to be alone with any of them, nor is it permissible for her to uncover herself before him. Rather, one must be cautious. Yes.
