The Best Rites of Hajj

Question:
This questioner asks: Which is better, O Shaykh— the reward of ifrad, or qiran, or tamattu'?

Answer:
Tamattu' is better, because one enters with 'Umrah, performs tawaf and sa'y, and shortens the hair or shaves it, then exits the state of ihram. Then he enters the state of ihram for Hajj on the eighth day. This is better. This is the tamattu' that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to perform. It is called tamattu' because one enters the state of ihram for 'Umrah, performs tawaf, performs sa'y, shortens the hair, and exits the state of ihram.
And if one entered the state of ihram for Hajj, or for Hajj and 'Umrah, he may also exit the state of ihram. He breaks them into four [days], meaning: even if he had declared his intention for Hajj alone, or for Hajj and 'Umrah together as a qarin, it is recommended for him to perform tawaf, perform sa'y, shorten the hair, and exit the state of ihram, making it an 'Umrah, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the Companions to do, except for the one who brought sacrificial animals. Except for the one who came with sacrificial animals from his country, or from the road—camels, cattle, or sheep—intending to draw near to Allah with them in Mina; this person does not exit the state of ihram. He remains in his state of ihram until he performs Hajj.
