The Difference Between Hajj Tamattu' and Hajj Qiran, and an Explanation of Which Is Better

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : This is what I wish to remind you of on the occasion of the Hajj to the House of Allah the Exalted: that the pilgrim should make his Hajj a tamattu' Hajj, not an ifrad Hajj, and likewise not a qiran Hajj, even though the qiran Hajj includes an 'Umrah. This is because qiran is the combining of 'Umrah and Hajj, but the qiran Hajj does not have this separation between the 'Umrah and the Hajj, which is the tamattu' mentioned in the Qur'an:
then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals
[Al-Baqarah 2:196]
. Qiran agrees with tamattu' in one aspect and differs from it in another. It agrees with it in the combining of Hajj and 'Umrah, and it agrees with it in that it is obligatory to have a sacrificial animal (hady). And qiran [has] some difficulty and hardship in it. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as He said:
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If I had known beforehand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals with me
Sunan Abi Dawud 1784
— meaning an 'Umrah of tamattu' — because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj as qiran, but he had brought the sacrificial animals with him. And many of his Companions who performed Hajj with him were also performing qiran like him. However, these people performing qiran were of two types: some of them — and they were the fewer — brought the sacrificial animals with them, just as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought them from Dhu al-Hulayfah. The others — and they were the majority — did not bring the sacrificial animals with them... It was qiran, but they did not bring the sacrificial animals. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered these people performing qiran, in addition to those performing ifrad, because they did not bring the sacrificial animals, to break their qiran and their ifrad Hajj into an 'Umrah. And when they hesitated at first, he said:
If I had known beforehand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals with me
Sunan Abi Dawud 1784
; meaning he was encouraging them to break their Hajj and qiran into an 'Umrah, and he was comforting them by saying: "If it were not that I brought the sacrificial animals, I would have done what I am ordering you to do." Therefore, we do not advise anyone to perform Hajj Qiran, even though it includes an 'Umrah, and even though it fulfills his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Umrah has been entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 932Sahih (Darussalam)
, except that in it is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered those who performed Hajj Qiran and did not bring the sacrificial animals to break their Hajj and qiran into an 'Umrah.
So if we imagine now a person who represents the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) completely, like Abu Bakr and the others of his Companions, seeing a man who has performed Hajj Qiran and did not bring the sacrificial animals, what do you think he would say to him? He would say to him what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded his companions to change it into ‘Umrah and clip their hair after running (between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah), and then take off their ihram except those who brought the sacrificial animals with them. They remarked should we go to Mina with our penises dripping with prostatic fluid? These remarks reached the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ). Thereupon he said “had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later اجعلوا حجَّكم عمرة ، ولولا أني استقبلت من أمري ما استدبرت
Sunan Abi Dawud 1789Sahih (Al-Albani)
to the end of the hadith. And therefore, we follow him (peace and blessings be upon him) as much as we are able to do so. And we do not advise a pilgrim to perform a qiran Hajj, except if we imagine a very rare, special case, such as in our lands, where he brings the sacrificial animals with him, at least from Dhu al-Hulayfah. Bringing the sacrificial animals means bringing the livestock he intends to sacrifice for Allah to Mina. This is almost imaginary for our time and our social upbringing. If we imagine this scenario, we do not prevent the qiran Hajj, but since this is closer to imagination than to reality, there remains for the pilgrims nothing but to perform tamattu'. That is better for them and easier.
This is sufficient.
