Encouraging the Following of the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
With Allah’s blessing, we begin this session with a question from one of the listening brothers. He says in this question: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718a
He also said:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
And in the time of the Caliph Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) there was only one adhan, then the second adhan was added for the Friday prayer. Is this addition considered an innovation, or is it part of the Sunnah? What are innovations? And what are their categories? May you be rewarded.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
These hadiths mentioned by the questioner are authentic. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718a
Its authenticity is agreed upon from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). In another wording, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718b
Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
An innovation (bid'ah) is what people introduce in Islam in acts of obedience and nearness to Allah; it is called an innovation. What people introduce in worship is called an innovation. For example: the innovation of celebrating the Mawlid, the innovation of building on graves, and making mosques and domes over graves, and the like of what people introduce. The meaning of "rejected" is: it is rejected.
But what Uthman did regarding the second adhan during his caliphate is not an innovation; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
and he is one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. He introduced the second adhan, and it was the first for the sake of public interest, for the benefit of the Muslims so that they would be alert for the Friday prayer. For this reason, the Companions approved it during his time, and the Muslims practiced it after him; because it falls within his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me. Hold fast to it and grip it with your teeth.
.
Likewise, what was done during his time regarding the compilation of the Mushaf: people were memorizing the Qur'an in their chests, and in his time, they feared that the Qur'an would be lost from them. So the opinion of the Companions gathered that it should be written in the Mushafs; so that it would remain in the hands of the Muslims, and so that it would be preserved. And this was among the good deeds that Allah guided the Companions to.
Likewise, what Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did in gathering the people on one imam for the Tarawih in Ramadan. They were in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying in groups in the mosque, each praying for himself, or praying with two, or three, or four, or more. Then Uthman gathered them on one imam; because he saw that this was better than their being scattered. He followed the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he prayed with the people in congregation for several nights in Ramadan, then he said:
I fear that the night prayer will become obligatory upon you, so he ordered them to pray in their homes.
.
So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, revelation ceased, and the obligation of it was secured; for this reason, Uthman gathered them, and it became an established Sunnah to gather the people on one imam in Ramadan for the Tarawih and the night prayer. Yes.
