The Ruling on Joking with One's Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says in this question: What is the ruling on joking with one's parents, such as calling the mother by her name, or calling the father by his name within the limits of the religion, with their satisfaction with this joking and their not being angry about it, and that is for the purpose of entertainment and relaxation for oneself and for the parents?

Answer:
A little joking is permissible, if it is done with truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to joke a little, but with truth—(peace and blessings be upon him). So a little joking with one's parents, or with one's siblings, or with others, if it is done with truth, is permissible; but it is disliked to do it excessively, so it should be kept to a minimum.
And it is better regarding the parents to call them by the name they are pleased with: "O my father," "O my mother," "O my mother," this is the best, instead of saying: "O so-and-so," "O Fatimah," "O such-and-such," "O Muhammad," "O Zayd," calling them by their name. It is better to say: "O my father," or "O father of so-and-so," or "O mother of so-and-so," like that. Call them by the names they love most and the words they love most. And if you joke with them, let it be with truth, and let it be little if they are pleased with your joking. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
