Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a question from a Sudanese resident in the Kingdom, who has used this code for his name. He says: "My esteemed Shaykh, this questioner wrote in his own style, stating that he is a Sudanese resident in the Kingdom, forty-five years old. He says: 'My problem, my esteemed Shaykh, before I came to the Kingdom, I owned sheep in Sudan. One day, a dispute arose between me and one of the farmers. So, I went to the farm at night, to the crops of this aforementioned man, with my sheep, and I destroyed the crops entirely, and I fled from that place at night. That was about ten years ago, or approximately thirteen years. I confessed to this, my esteemed Shaykh, that everything I did at that time was intentional and with my intent. But after Allah granted me guidance, I regretted it intensely, a regret known only to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). I sought Allah's forgiveness many times for the crime I committed against this man. Now, my honorable Shaykh, I wish to make expiation for what I did. I am awaiting your fatwa, knowing that this aforementioned person has passed away. I ask for your guidance regarding my question?'"
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
It is obligatory for you, my brother, to repent to Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), because this is a crime and an injustice. So, it is obligatory for you to repent to Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a sincere repentance, regretting what has passed from you, ceasing the act, and resolving not to return to such matters. And you must compensate him for what you destroyed, at its value. You must compensate his heirs for its value, giving them the full value, along with seeking forgiveness and repentance from Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) . This is a great evil and a great injustice, so you must be cautious in compensating the value, and give them the value of what you destroyed. And with repentance, Allah forgives what has passed. Praise be to Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
