The Ruling on Occupying Oneself with Worldly Sciences and Neglecting the Study of Islamic Jurisprudence

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner (M. A. A.) from Aleppo says in this question: I am a student in the scientific branch of the secondary stage, and acquiring worldly sciences has occupied me from studying the religion of Allah in depth. Am I sinful for that, O honorable Shaykh?

Answer:
Yes, it is obligatory for you to study the jurisprudence of your religion. You must learn, and not let worldly sciences occupy you from religious sciences. Allah has made it obligatory for you to worship Him, and there is no path to worship except through understanding and knowledge. So you must learn what enables you to know your religion and the worship for which you were created. This is based on the saying of the Exalted:
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
[Surah Adh-Dhariyat: 56]. You must know this worship and perform it as Allah has commanded. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religionمن يرد الله به خيرًا؛ يفقهه في الدين
Sahih Muslim 1037a
.
Therefore, you must learn what enables you to attain understanding of the religion, so that you perform what Allah has made obligatory upon you with insight, and so that you leave what Allah has forbidden with insight. This is the obligatory duty. The obligation is that you know from your religion what you cannot afford to be ignorant of: what Allah has made obligatory for you and what He has forbidden for you; so that you perform the obligatory and stay away from the forbidden.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
