The rider is a devil, and the two riders are two devils, and the three are a caravan (if it is not possible for a person to travel with me, and I am one who travels frequently, and I want to apply the Sunnah)

The questioner : In the hadith:
A single rider is a devil, and a pair of riders are a pair of devils, but three are a company of riders. الراكب شيطان و الراكبان شيطانان والثلاثة ركب
Sunan Abi Dawud 2607Hasan (Al-Albani)
If it is not possible for a person to travel with me, and I am one who travels frequently, and I want to apply the Sunnah, but it is not possible for anyone to travel with me, what should I do? And do I fall under this hadith if I travel alone?

The Shaykh : As for populated roads where there are many passersby, one does not fall under this hadith. For example, here in Saudi Arabia, on the road from al-Qasim to Riyadh, if a person travels alone, he is not actually alone, because the road is like a street in a town; cars do not cease for a moment, with a car passing by you or passing by it. But the intended meaning in the hadith is what was the case in the early times, when a man would go alone on his camel in the deserts with no one with him. This is an error, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against it by saying:
It is a devil إنه شيطان
.
Because this person may fall asleep and the sun may overtake him and he may become exhausted, or he may fall ill, or he may die. But, praise be to Allah, the populated roads we have, where the route is always busy, do not consider a person to be traveling alone if he travels in his car alone.
