Ruling on Marriage to a Woman of the Book

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
His Eminence the Shaykh, after that we move to Jordan, and the questioner Mahmoud Muhammad says in this question: Is it permissible for a Muslim man to marry a polytheist woman of the Book, whether she is Jewish or Christian? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is permissible to marry a Jewish or Christian woman of the Book if she is chaste, modest, known for her modesty, and free; because Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said in Surat al-Ma'idah:
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] loversالْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ إِذَا آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ مُحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحِينَ وَلا مُتَّخِذِي أَخْدَانٍ
[al-Ma'idah: 5].
So if she is chaste and modest, and the chaste man marries her, there is nothing wrong with it. However, it is better, safer, and more cautious regarding evil for him to marry a Muslim woman who is a Muslim; because she may harm her children, and she may call them to her false religion. So it is better for him to marry a Muslim woman who is Hanifi—meaning: upon the religion of Islam—than to marry a woman of the Book, even though it is permissible. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
