What is your ruling on one who does not trim what exceeds a fistful from his beard? And is it true that you consider it a sin for one who does not trim his beard?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: My Shaykh, in compliance with His saying—Glorified and Exalted is He—and:
if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا
[Al-Hujurat 49:6]
We heard a fatwa from some of the brothers who were in Kuwait, and he said that some of the brothers there stated that a fatwa was issued from you that one who does not trim his beard is sinful?

The Shaykh: No, I did not say this.

The questioner: Glory be to Allah!

The Shaykh: This is a lie, but I say that exceeding a fistful in letting the beard grow is contrary to the Sunnah.

The questioner: Yes, please repeat that, if you please, my Shaykh?

The Shaykh: Letting the beard grow beyond a fistful is contrary to the Sunnah.

The questioner: Okay, I am now asking a question, my Shaykh: Did it come from the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—that he trimmed?

The Shaykh: It is not established from the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—neither this nor its opposite. But we do not take our knowledge of what our Prophet was like from his words alone, but also from his actions and the actions of his Companions who accompanied him and knew him. It is not reported from any of the Salaf that he left his beard long so that the winds would blow it about, but it is established from a large number of them that they used to trim what exceeded a fistful.

The questioner: I do not know of them, my Shaykh, except Abdullah ibn Umar. Can you mention to me two or three Companions besides him?

The Shaykh: I mention to you Abu Hurayrah.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: And I mention to you Mujahid from the Tabi'un.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: And I mention Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i, who mentions this regarding the Companions.

The questioner: Yes, yes, may Allah bless you, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And may He reward you.

The questioner: May Allah bless you and reward you with good for us and for the Muslims, if Allah wills.

The Shaykh: May Allah reward you with good and accept from you.

The questioner: O Allah, amen, and my greetings to all the brothers with you, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : It will reach them, if Allah wills.

The questioner : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
