Question:
The questioner, Abdullah Abdul Rahman from Libya, has a set of questions. He says: I want to gain understanding in the religion, and I am a student of Islamic jurisprudence. It would be best if His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz would mention to us some books on jurisprudence that you recommend I read?
Answer:
We recommend the Noble Qur'an to you, and frequent recitation of it, for it is the greatest and most noble book, and it contains great knowledge; it teaches you the foundations of your religion, and it teaches you the legal rulings in your prayer and other matters. So we recommend the Noble Qur'an to you, and frequent recitation of it, and reflection on its meanings. Then we also recommend the Sunnah; memorizing what is feasible of the Sunnah, such as Bulugh al-Maram... such as Umdat al-Hadith. These are two great, concise books, and their benefit is immense; so we recommend memorizing what is feasible of them, or memorizing both of them, along with the Nawawi Forty and its completion by Ibn Rajab, fifty hadiths from the concise words, whose benefit is immense. We recommend books of creed, such as the Book of Tawhid... Kashf al-Shubuhat by Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him), the Three Fundamental Principles, and the Four Basic Doctrines, also by him. Al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah is a great and beneficial book on creed. We recommend all students with these books; because they are very beneficial and the need for them is pressing. We also recommend everyone with the other books of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, such as al-Tadmuriyyah and al-Hamawiyyah, and such as the books of Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), for he is from the people of the Sunnah and the community. And such as Sharh al-Tahawiyyah by Ibn Abi al-'Izz, a great and beneficial book, and the Book of Tawhid by Ibn Khuzaymah.
As for jurisprudence, its books are numerous. If he memorizes something like Zad al-Mustaqni' by al-Hijawi, or such as the Book of Fiqh by al-Muwaffaq, or Dalil al-Talib. The point is: if it is feasible for him to have one of the books written on jurisprudence by the well-known imams from the people of the Sunnah, there is no harm. He can use it to help him understand the texts. He can use this book, but he should not follow it blindly or be fanatical. Rather, he should use it to help him understand the texts. This is permissible. Zad al-Mustaqni'... Dalil al-Talib, and similar books that have been written on jurisprudence. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
