How to Practice Asceticism in This World

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner asks: How does one practice asceticism in this world? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Asceticism in this world means preferring the Hereafter over it and not overexerting oneself. Rather, one should be content with what is lawful and be content with what helps one in the obedience of Allah. One should not overexert oneself in anything that distracts one from the Hereafter. The meaning of asceticism is not abandoning this world and abandoning wealth. No, it is abandoning doubtful matters, abandoning greed in the pursuit of trade that distracts one from the Hereafter, from the obedience of Allah, from seeking knowledge, from enjoining good and forbidding evil, and from the recommended voluntary acts. That is, one strives to seek the Hereafter through righteous deeds, and this world does not distract one from the Hereafter, but one does not abandon it. One seeks it... one sells... one buys... one plants trees... one farms... and so on, from the means of sustenance. One seeks sustenance just as the Prophets (peace be upon them) sought it, but they did not prefer it over the Hereafter. It does not distract them from the Hereafter; rather, the deeds of the Hereafter are prioritized over the matters of this world. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to doاحرص على ما ينفعك واستعن بالله ولا تعجز، وإن أصابك شيء فلا تقل: لو أني فعلت لكان كذا وكذا، ولكن قل قدر الله وما شاء فعل
Sahih Muslim 2664
. So the believer seeks sustenance, but his world does not distract him from his Hereafter. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
