What is the obligation of one who swears a false oath?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From Yemen, this is a message sent by the listener (A. A. A.), a Sudanese resident in Yemen. Our brother has four questions.
In his first question, he says: I have a brother who obtained a passport and wanted to obtain another one. During the investigation, the investigator said to him: "Do you swear that you do not have a previous passport?" The brother had not seen a Qur'an in front of the investigator, and then the investigator brought one out. The brother was afraid and swore that he had not obtained another passport. Please inform us of the ruling on this, and whether he has committed a sin? And is the expiation sufficient?

Answer:
He must repent to Allah the Exalted; because he is a liar, and the liar must repent to Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and be truthful in that, feel remorse, and not return to it. In the correct opinion, there is no expiation for a false oath. Expiations are for oaths regarding the future if one violates them, such as saying: "By Allah, I will not do such and such," or "By Allah, I will speak to so-and-so."
So the oaths that have an expiation are those concerning future matters. As for the liar, he must only repent. He repents to Allah and turns to Him, feels remorse for what has passed, and resolves sincerely not to return to it. By that, Allah erases the sin from him, for repentance erases sins; Allah erases sins by it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam)
, and Allah the Exalted says:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[al-Nur: 31]. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
