The Shaykh :"And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'For me, it is more beloved to swear by Allah falsely than to swear by other than Him truthfully'".
His statement:
Because لأن
This lam is the lam of beginning, and "an" is a source particle, so his saying "that I swear" is interpreted as a source that is the subject, the estimation being "my swearing by Allah, my swearing," and as for his saying "is more beloved to me," this is the predicate of the subject. Is there a parallel in the Qur'an? Yes, His saying, the Exalted:
But to fast is best for you وأن تصوموا خير لكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:184]
"Then, that you fast," this is a subject interpreted as a source due to the entry of the source particle "an" upon it, and "better" is the predicate of the subject. He says: "For me, it is more beloved to swear by Allah falsely," "falsely" is a state from "I swear," meaning: I swear in the state of being a liar, it is more beloved to me than that I swear by other than Him truthfully. And his saying:
I like أحب إلي
This is from the chapter of preference in which there is nothing in either side, and this is rare in speech, because preference in the original sense is that the meaning is established in the preferred one, and what about the other? And the one preferred over, and sometimes it is the rank of the preferred one without the one preferred over, and sometimes it is not present in this one nor in that one, so Ibn Mas'ud does not love this nor that, but it is easier for him, it is easier for him to swear by Allah falsely than to swear by other than Him truthfully.
Swearing by other than Allah falsely is forbidden from two aspects. The first aspect: that it is a lie, and lying in itself is forbidden. The second aspect: that it is coupled with the oath, and the oath is the exaltation of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and when it is linked to a lie, the meaning of that is that the swearer has a deficiency regarding Allah, Mighty and Majestic, where he made His great name a confirmation for a matter of falsehood, so in it is something of mockery. For this reason, swearing by Allah falsely was, according to some scholars, of the type of oath that plunges its owner into sin and then into the Fire. Did you understand?
So, swearing by other than Allah falsely is forbidden from two aspects. The first: that it is a lie, and lying is forbidden. The second: that it is coupled with the oath to confirm it, and confirming a thing with the greatest name of Allah while it is a lie is a type of mockery, ridicule, and deficiency regarding Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
And as for his saying:
than that I swear by other than Him truthfully مِن أن أحلف بغيره صادقا
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 21:121
This has one danger, and what is it? Shirk (associating partners with Allah). As for the news, it is truth, the news is truth, there is no danger in it, but the danger is shirk. And this is evidence that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) holds that the evil of shirk is greater than the evil of lying, and greater than the evil of swearing by Allah in a way that is false, and greater than the oath that plunges, if we say that this is of the oath that plunges, because the evil of shirk is not forgiven:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء
[An-Nisa 4:48]
"And the messengers were not sent and the books were not revealed except to refute shirk and invalidate shirk," so it is the greatest of sins
Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice." إن الشرك لظلم عظيم
[Luqman 31:13]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Which sin is the greatest?" He said:
To set up rivals to Allah by worshipping others though He alone has created you أن تجعل لله ندا وهو خلقك
Sahih al-Bukhari 6811
Yes.
It is derived from the words of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that swearing by other than Allah is forbidden, is it not? Forbidden, and greater than the major sins. An example of that: a man says, "By Allah, so-and-so has arrived," and he has not arrived, is that so? This is swearing by Allah falsely. And another man says, "By my life, so-and-so has arrived," and he is arriving, this is shirk. He is truthful, he is arriving, but he swore by other than Allah, so he becomes one who associates partners with Allah.
