What is your opinion, Your Eminence, on the style of the adhan you heard in one of the gatherings?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: Your Eminence, the Shaykh, could you comment on the adhan we heard a little while ago?

The Shaykh: Yes, indeed. This adhan, in reality, both pleased me and did not please me. What did not please me, naturally, was the melodic ornamentation and the singing style. What pleased me was the beauty of his voice, because it reminded me of the hadith of Abu Mahdhura, who was one of the mu'adhdhins of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard him calling the adhan as an imitation, not out of faith. So he called him, and when faith entered his heart, he made him his mu'adhdhin (peace be upon him) and taught him how to call the adhan. Among the benefits we gained from this occasion, I say, was that from the hadith of Abu Mahdhura, we learned that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him the adhan, which is the adhan known today with its four repetitions, he said to him:
When you call the adhan for the dawn, the first adhan, say: Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep. فإذا أذَّنت للصبح الأذان الأول فقل : الصلاة خير من النوم ، الصلاة خير من النوم
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 3:55
. This is what is called in the language of the Shari'ah the tathwib in the Fajr prayer. We derived this tathwib from the hadith of Abu Mahdhura, and we derived its position from it, which is that it is in the first adhan.
